The governorRon DeSantis, will reinforce the protection of the southern border of Texas by sending troops from theNational Guard and theFlorida State Guard to install barbed wire.

DeSantis expressed his intention on Thursday at Jacksonville's Cecil Airport to cooperate with Texas tostrengthen border defenses, promoting the installation of new barriers and wire fences to stop what he described as "an invasion" of illegal immigrants.

This measure responds to the decision of the highest court in the United States that granted the federal government the power to remove border barriers, although theTexas National Guard It maintained operations last week.

Untilone thousand members of the Florida National Guard, complemented by state volunteers, will join Texas efforts in the short term.

Using a controversial speech, similar to that adopted by certain sectors of the Republican Party,DeSantis criticized the arrival of thousands of immigrants and asylum seekers to the border with Mexico.

These migrants usually surrender voluntarily to the authorities, although many others try to avoid detection. The barbed wire and concertina wires have not been able to deter the entry of irregular people, including minors who suffer danger of injury, but the strategy to strengthen security at the border continues.

DeSantis has focused his attention on Florida politics, encouraging the volunteer State Guard to contribute to immigration enforcement at the Texas border. Recent Florida bills could allow such interstate guard deployments.

The State Guard was deactivated in 1947 and reestablished by DeSantis in 2022, since then experiencing a significant increase in its funding and number of troops.

Other Republican states, such as Oklahoma and Iowa, have also collaborated with Texas on such border missions.

In January 2023,DeSantis activated the National Guard in the face of the massive arrival of Cuban and Haitian migrants to South Florida, calling the situation a reflection of the "failure" of Joe Biden's immigration policies.

In addition, he requested reinforcements through an Executive Order to prevent more arrivals and criticized the lack of federal support to the states.

The migration crisis, especially the Cuban one, has been notable in recent years. Nearly533,000 Cubans have arrived in the United States in just two years, which represents 4.8% of the Cuban population, without having other types of documented income.

The Customs and Border Protection Office (CBP) reported that more than 153,000 Cuban citizens entered the country irregularly in 2023.
