Viral meme for World Radio Day: “I am a journalist in Cuba and of course I can…”

From the author of the report known as "Marianao is rich", now comes a satire on press freedom in Cuba.

Just three seconds were enough for the Cuban official journalistElizabeth Cánovas to mock the supposed “freedom of the press” in Cuba, using a meme that went viral on social networks.

A fragment of a video of his in which he walks along Avenida 23 in Havana's Vedado, apparently recording news coverage or a television report, cuts abruptly in the middle of the sentence and some credits enter with comedy music.

“I am a journalist in Cuba and of course I can…”, the Canal Habana reporter is heard saying before the image fades to black and the well-known credits of the memes “directed” byRobert B. Weide.

What the meme consists of, or the fun of this Cánovas post, many who see it will wonder. At first, the satire of the journalist is evident, as she cuts off the sentence just at the moment when she is supposedly going to say or list the things she can do as a professional in Cuba.

The appeal serves to underline the impotence of theofficial journalists in Cuba. But what are the end credits for? Those who do not know the story behind Weide and the meaning of that end credits curtain will ask.

Here is the explanation: it is a resource used by meme authors, who falsely attribute the “authorship” of the meme to Weide. This resource, used in 2015 byJason Richards It quickly became popular among social media users, who began to attribute the “authorship” of their memes to Weide.

What do these memes “directed” by Weide have in common? Well, the scene we see is authentic, the situation borders on the absurd or even exceeds it, and the behavior of the protagonist(s) causes a certain embarrassment.

The video may seem like an exaggerated caricature of reality, but it is not.: it is always a real scene. According to the Spanish newspaperThe world, this produces a certainly curious paradox, since Weide is a renowned American film and television director, but now he is known, above all, for being the most famous “director” of memes in the world.

The music that accompanies the credits curtain belongs to a series directed mainly by him:Curb Your Enthusiasm, the series starring, written and produced by the comedianLarry David.

Well that. From Cuba, Robert B. Weide has once again “directed” one of his memes to mock the censorship against the press and highlight the absurdity of “being a journalist” in a country without freedom of the press.

The true author of the meme, the Cuban official journalist Elizabeth Cánovas, has done it again. Before this latest exaggerated caricature of reality,She was the author of the report that went down in history as “Marianao is delicious.”. Of those dusts...
