The progress of the works of theHotel K23 in Vedado, Havana, arouses controversy since some Cubans see this investment as a painful contrast with the economic and social situation facing the island.

In a recent post in the groupFacebook Photos of Havana, the moderatorCarlos Espinosa Betancourt has revealed images of the works in progress of theHotel K23, located as its name suggests, between K, 23 and 25 streets in the emblematic neighborhood of El Vedado.

The photographs show significant progress in construction, including details such as an impressive cantilever on the 32nd floor for recreational spaces, which is already equipped with panoramic glass.

The building is expected to have modern safety and comfort features. Among them, steel beams with a plaster coating, intended to prevent overheating during fires.

It will also have windows made with double glass panels, sealed with a special gas that gives them greater resistance to impacts.

On the 41st floor there will be access to aSky Bar restaurant with panoramic views of Havana, which promises to be one of the most iconic places within this tower.

During a tour offered by theengineer Alejandro Manuel Silva González, some of the premium finishes that the establishment will have were highlighted, such as the definitive granite floors in the hotel lobby.

The hotel is owned by the Gaviota hotel group, belonging to the military business conglomerate GAESA. They agreed that the management of the property will remain in the hands of theSpanish company Iberostar.

The Cuban government announced in December 2023 that theHotel K23, which aspires to be the tallest in the country with more than 154 meters and 500 rooms,It's almost finished.

This construction, located in a privileged area with views of the sea, has been illuminated some nights, while other areas of the city suffer blackouts, something that many Cubans have interpreted as a "wink of black humor" by the regime.

The construction ofHotel K23 has generated numerous criticisms, since the project has required a considerable investment in a context of national economic crisis, with increasing poverty rates and a collapsing health system.

This fact increases in some the resentment towards the government, for being more focused on developing tourist infrastructure than on addressing the basic public health and social assistance needs of the population.
