Miami man arrested for lewd assault on girl

The attacker, identified as Elijah Jean-Gilles, attacked the 12-year-old girl when she was on her way to a smoothie shop on North Miami Avenue and Northwest 24th Street.

Miami police arrested a man suspected of havingsexually assaulted a 12 year old girl, who was heading to a local store, on Friday afternoon.

The arrest report states that, shortly after 2:30 p.m. that day, after leaving school, the victim and a witness were walking toward the store.Bubba Tea and Smoothies, located in the area of North Miami Avenue and Northwest 24th Street, when they encountered the defendant,Elijah Jean-Gilles, 20 years old and without a known home.

The girl and her companion were walking south on North Miami Avenue, and Jean-Gilles was heading north.

The minor told the authorities that Jean-Gilles pretended to pick something up from the floor when suddenlyHe grabbed the girl's genitals, above the clothes, according to a report from the television channelLocal 10 News.

Police said the victim pulled the attacker's hand away, and she and the witness ran to the smoothie shop, where she called her mother.

After the witness confirmed the minor's complaint, hours later the police arrested Jean-Gilles, who refused to give statements.

The defendant faces a charge oflascivious and dishonest assault on a minor and is being held at the Metro West Detention Center, according to jail documents, the court said.New Herald.

In April 2023, Jean-Gilles was expelled from the Florida International University (FIU) campus for trespassing, according to court records.

The FIU Police Departmentissued a warning which prohibited the young man from accessing any property of the institution, and requested to contact the authorities in case someone identified him from the photo on the flyer.
