A Cuban mother exploded online against the government, since her son has been waiting for a kidney transplant for four years, even though the child's father is compatible for the donation.
Mailín Rueda Sevilashared a video addressed to the Ministry of Public Health and the doctorAntonio Enamorado, national transplant coordinator, whom she accuses of having deceived her and letting the child worsen his condition.
Helittle boy, only 10 years old, undergoes hemodialysis sessions for three hours, three times a week. The last time, he came home with a headache and vomiting and told her he didn't want to have any more treatments.
"When a 10-year-old child tells you that, so much so that he has fought to live, you break down and you don't know what to do, because you have no answer. BecauseMy child is waiting for a transplant, do you know how long? Four years ago"Mailín stressed.
Juan Ernesto Benítez Rueda suffers from chronic kidney failure in terminal phase. He began hemodialysis in October 2020. In 2021 the transplant team determined that his father was compatible and could donate the kidney, but there was always a problem with not doing the operation.
First, the minor needed to have a fistula; then, the pandemic arrived and finally, the lack of resources. When the mother got those supplies, the hospital did not allow them to be used: "They prefer the patient to die," she said.
This brave mother, a native of Antilla, in Holguín, moved with her son to Santiago de Cuba for three years because in her province hemodialysis treatments are not performed on pediatric patients.
Last year, tired of so many lies and delays, she went to social networks to request help for an operation for the little one abroad. He managed to raise $10,000, but the effort was unsuccessful.. "Painfully, we were unable to obtain a humanitarian visa for the child," he lamented.
In these years, Ernesto's condition has worsened. He has problems with his fistula and the treatment cannot be done properly, he has lost his hearing and suffers from hypertension that could affect his heart.
"My child does not know how to read or write, because he has not been able to go to school, because he has no life, "he can't," Mailin said painfully.
At the end of last year, they sent him to be treated at the Centro Habana Pediatric Hospital, where the dose of erythropoietin and iron was increased, so the patient has not had to have more blood transfusions, which were monthly in Santiago.
"I've been here in Havana for five months, and my son hasn't needed a transfusion for five months. So, what are you telling me, that I'm crazy? No, right? Proof thatThey were not giving him the medications he was taking, he was giving him unnecessary transfusions", he denounced.
The last time Mailín was promised a transplant was four months ago, and nothing since then. "Another lie and they've been telling me that for four years."
"I ask, Ministry of Public Health, whose family does my son have to be for you to operate on him? Whose family does my son have to be for you to take urgent measures? Because my child has his kidney here, he does not He has to wait for no cadaver donor, he has his kidney, his father's," he questioned.
"I am demanding solutions. I want you to operate it, here in Cuba or in another country. Get it out, you can, because you have shown that you can," he concluded.
Last May, this brave mother screamed for help on social mediaasking for a humanitarian visa so that his son, then nine years old, could be operated in the United States.
"You don't know how many children I have seen die without a second chance, I don't want my son to be one more," he then pleaded.
Three months later, through the social networks of dancer and choreographer Noly Blak, Mailín sharedanother desperate request to raise funds for their little one.
Unfortunately, despite raising $10,000, the family was unable to obtain the long-awaited visa.
