The former president of the United StatesDonald Trump He declared himself in favor of prohibiting abortion after the 15th week of pregnancy, although with exceptions.
"Let's set a time, and maybe we can unite the country on that issue," he said this week in an interview on the radio station's "Sid & Friends in the Morning" program.WABC.
"As for the number of weeks, people agree on 15. And I'm thinking in terms of that. And the result will be something very reasonable. But people really agree, even the hardliners, it seems that 15 weeks seems to be a number that people agree on," he explained.
The Republican leader, who so far is emerging as the candidate of his Party who will face Biden in the November elections, has admitted that to guarantee victory he would agree to include exceptions in the law for cases of rape, incest and when life of the mother is in danger if the pregnancy continues.
"I support the vast majority of Republicans in this. This is the problem, they have to win elections. If not, they would go back to square one," he said.
Trump criticized Democrats for not supporting a law limiting abortion in states that allow termination of pregnancy. Despite his willingness to sign a national ban, in his opinion this issue should be regulated at the state level.
"Everyone agrees (we've heard it for years), all the jurists on both sides agree: it's a state issue. It shouldn't be a federal issue, it's a state issue," he said.
In June 2022, the former president praised thedecision of the United States Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade, which recognized a woman's constitutional right to abortion and legalized it throughout the country.
"This is consistent with the Constitution and restores rights that should have been granted a long time ago," he stressed then.
In interview withFox NewsWhen asked if he felt he played a role in the judges' ruling, he only responded:"God made the decision."
During his presidency, Trump had appointed three conservative justices – Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett – to the Supreme Court, making the Court majority conservative.
Therefore, when deciding the annulment of the abortion law, there was an overwhelming 6-3 Republican victory over the justices appointed by Democrats.
