In the long lines at the ticket agency Venezuelan airline Conviasa, in the Miramar Business Center, in the Havana municipality of Playa, numerous people are gathered who hope to purchase their tickets to travel to Nicaragua.
According to a report from the television network Telemundo 51, the aforementioned agency closed its doors a month and a half ago, leaving residents on the Island plunged into uncertainty.
The lack of communication from this company “has generated frustration and discontent among applicants,” he says. Telemundo, who also add that the Cubans continue to stand guard at the doors of the facility.
Let us remember that since 2021, Cubans do not require a visa to travel to Nicaragua and therefore they use the route to reach the United States, crossing several Central American countries.
Due to this measure, the migratory flow has grown significantly, causing the response of the US government with restrictions on airlines that contribute to irregular migration in the region.
Despite the calls made from the United States, Airlines such as Conviasa and Aruba Airlines announced a schedule of flights that they would carry out between Cuba and Managua in January 2024 despite the visa restriction for operators imposed by the US.
The business has become lucrative for resellers, who see an opportunity with the resale of tickets to the Central American nation, also because tickets with Conviasa can only be purchased physically at the agency located in Miramar.
Despite this complaint, the event is not accidental at this stage. Since 2021, the year in which the visa-free measure was established, hundreds of Cubans have gathered, every day, in front of the office where they sell air tickets to Nicaragua.
As reviewed AFP, Cuban clients faced two big problems: the high price of tickets and the available flights are not for recent dates. Issues that continue to impact nationals' intentions to travel.
In 2023, Cubans will once again stand in long lines at travel agencies to buy tickets to Nicaragua, following the announcement that the United States would accept asylum applications from Mexico.
Airlines like Air Century, based in the Dominican Republic, suspended flights from Cuba to Nicaragua following the announcement of sanctions by the United States government on charter companies that facilitate illegal migration.
