Problems with cargo transportation prevent the production of the Puerto Padre salt pan reach territories other than its usual market in the provinces of Las Tunas, Holguín and Villa Clara.

A report of Newspaper 26 indicated that the entity has the productive capacity to supply fine salt to other territories, however, he recognized that even consumers in Las Tunas, Holguín and Villa Clara have experienced salt shortage due to difficulties with cargo transportation.

The same problem affects the 220 men and more than 30 women who work at the salt mine, who travel several kilometers on foot within the facility, according to the official newspaper.

The company produced more than 25,000 tons of salt in 2023 and this year's plan will be similar, even with the transportation shortages and other problems.

The saltworks provides for the extraction of 32,000 tons of raw material to produce 16,500 tons of coarse salt for its main customer, the Electrochemical Industry of Sagua la Grande, in Villa Clara, and animal feed, and 8,500 tons destined for the basic basket and the social consumption

Despite the recognized “material and structural difficulties,” the entity aspires to export salt again, declared Yenisleydys Domínguez Sánchez, technical head of the unit. “That is a possibility that we can materialize.”

During the Third Industry and Trade Fair of 2023, the representative of the Caribbean Community (Caricom) showed interest in the salt company's products, especially those intended for the electrochemical industry, the directive said.

Problems in salt transportation are not new in the midst of the current crisis affecting the country, the worst in the last six decades.

The Minister of Energy and Mines of Cuba, Vicente de la O Levy, acknowledged that at the beginning of the year there were delays in the delivery of the salt quota for the population due to product transportation problems.

"We have more than 9,000 tons of salt in the salt flats," said De la O Levy, who admitted that the warehouses were full, but there was no way to distribute it due to problems with the poor technical condition of the railway boxes that transport the product. .

The problem with the transfer of this product was evident in the Las Tunas municipality of Jobabo when The lack of fine salt affected bread production in March.

“It can be forgiven that there is a lack of flour or another imported component due to the economic-financial situation that the country presents and this is reasonable, but if it is salt, it is counterproductive,” denounced the official journalist Domínguez Espinosa in .
