The Cuban academic and activist Alina Bárbara López Hernández She was arbitrarily detained this Thursday when she was heading from Matanzas to Havana, her daughter reported on social networks.
A short post on the profile of Facebook of the prominent professor, apparently written by her daughter Cecilia Borroto López, expresses "I am the daughter of Alina Bárbara López Hernández. I write this statement to inform that My mother was detained at the Bacunayagua checkpoint while on her way to Havana".
"She could only tell me that and that she would call me in a few minutes. She didn't, so I waited 30 minutes and started calling her again and she didn't answer my cell phone. Borroto López sent a message to the regime stating that she and her brothers would take to the streets if they were not given news of the detainee.
Several Cuban activists and relatives of political prisoners denounced what they consider an abuse against López Hernández and demanded his release.
The academic, based in Matanzas, was taken to trial in November of last year for the alleged crime of “disobedience”, after in April 2023 he went out with a sign to the central park of that city to demand the release of the writer and journalist Jorge Fernández Era.
After the trial, López Hernández was considered guilty, and sanctioned by the Municipal Court of Matanzas to pay a fine.
