The Cuban dancer Carlos Acosta and his company Acosta Danza have been nominated for UK National Dance Awards.
Carlos is nominated in the Outstanding Creative Contribution category for the show "Black Sabbath_The Ballet", created for Birmingham Royal Ballet -which he directs- and inspired by the music of the rock band Black Sabbath, which was founded in 1968 and was active until 2017.
"The great musical legacy of Black Sabbath will enter the world of dance. It is a truly exciting challenge to unite these contrasting art forms," Acosta wrote when announcing the project, released last September.
On the other hand, Acosta Danza competes with four other companies in the category of Best Medium-sized Company.
The National Awards are awarded each year by the dance section of the UK Performing Arts Critics' Circle to the best shows that were presented in that country between January 1 and December 31.
The winners will be announced at a live ceremony at The Coronet Theater in London next Monday, June 3.
Carlos Acosta assumed the direction of the Royal Ballet of Birmingham in January 2020, one of the most prestigious companies in the world
One of Its purposes have been to raise the level of dancers through a repertoire that he characterized as "crucial."
"I want a company that is strong, that is not predictable, that is energetic, that takes risks, but that stays true to tradition at the highest level. I am ready for crazy big ideas. I will never say no to anything new and bold," he declared.
