In the audiovisual he expressed his support for the political prisoners and asked for freedom in Cuba. He was wearing a white sweater adorned with the phrases “Patria y Vida, Libertad, Cuba”, and the symbols “11J” and “17M”, alluding to the dates of important protests on the island.
The nurse traveled to Santiago de Cuba on March 22, for Easter. He was scheduled to return to Havana on March 28, but was detained before boarding a train. For four days Velázquez Cruz was missing from his family, until they reported the situation to the police and demanded to locate him.
The nurse has legal representation in Santiago de Cuba, but family and friends are highly skeptical about the effectiveness of his lawyer in achieving his release. "We want to at least get him transferred to Havana," said a relative.
Yerismar Velázquez Cruz has been recognized as a political prisoner in the monthly list of Prisoners Defenders. This NGO warns that in March 31 new political prisoners were added to Cuba, reaching a total of 1,092.
