A couple of Canadian tourists, who recently visited the island, lived an experience that they described as terrifying when they required the medical services offered in Cuba due to an emergency operation.
Caroline Tétrault and Christian Maître, residents of the Canadian city of Shawinigan, were due to return to the northern country on April 4 after a vacation in Cuba, but the day before their flight, acute pain in the woman did not allow that trip.
Caroline suffered from peritonitis and required urgent surgery, which showed him the less visible side of the world of Cuban medicine.
“There is no light, there are dogs, it's really suspicious, it's really a horror movie setting”, describe Christian Maître a Radio Canada without specifying the name of the hospital where they were treated.
Images shared by these tourists show the deplorable state of the hospital facility.
However, Maître assures that the doctor who treated his wife told him: “Here we don't have the infrastructure, we don't have the resources, but we have good staff.” He confesses that he confirmed it by saving her life.
The other part of the story was conditioned by the recovery stage, where foreigners had to resort to the black market to buy the food that the newly operated woman demanded, nor did they receive the medicines for their recovery, despite having insurance. doctor required by the Cuban government to travel to the island.
After an appeal on social networks and thanks to his family, tourists heading to Cuba brought them medicine and dressings from Mauricie.
After this experience, the couple assures that they do not plan to return to Cuba.
The bad experiences of tourists from this North American nation on the island have become public knowledge thanks to social networks and the Canadian media that are dedicated to disseminating them.
In 2023, A tourist from that country, identified as Deanna Lang, filed a lawsuit against the travel company Sunwing, based in Toronto, for recover the 8,000 dollars he paid for a trip to the Cuban resort of Varadero.
The woman, who stayed with her mother and five children in the Memories Varadero Beach Resort, said the trip turned into a nightmare due to multiple problems at the hotel, including lack of food and cockroaches everywhere.
Regarding cockroaches, recently A tourist reported the presence of cockroaches, as well as broken mattresses and toilets without lids at the Grand Memories Varadero.
Sadder has been the story of a Canadian family, to whom one of the members died on the island, and it has been an ordeal since the ambulance picked him up on the beach from where he was taken dead until the repatriation of the body.
The family that was waiting for the body of Faraj Allah Jarjour, 60 years old, who died of a heart attack during his vacation in Cuba, received the body of a Russian citizen.
During 2023 only 2.4 million international visitors visited Cuba. The island's regime expected to receive about 3.5 million tourists throughout the year. It was more than 30% below expectations. In contrast to this decline, the Dominican Republic and Mexico, especially destinations like Cancun, experienced a boom in the influx of foreign tourists.
