The events occurred on Saturday, May 4, when a group of fishermen rescued them after being adrift for more than a month. As stated by the survivors, four more people who were with them but lost their lives.

On May 6, the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MINREX) spoke out about the tragedy. The diplomatic entity specified that Fabio Álvarez, Cuban consul general in Monterrey, traveled to the city of Tamaulipas to offer consular assistance to the four surviving Cubans.
