In Tampa, they celebrate the challenge of eating the most Cuban sandwiches

The world sandwich-eating champion, Nick Wehrt, was the winner of the event.

The traditional Cuban sandwich competition took place this Saturday, May 17, in Tampa, United States. Its purpose, in addition to celebrating the dish, was to highlight the person who eats the most sandwiches in the shortest amount of time.

The event took place at the J.C. Newman Cigar Co. facilities in Tampa to celebrate Founder’s Day, according to a report from Telemundo 46.

The winner of the event was Nick Wehrt, who consumed 22 sandwiches in 8 minutes. Miki Sudo was also in attendance; both are world champions in competitive eating of this kind of food.

Made with exquisite Cuban bread, the recipe includes roasted pork, ham, butter, and pickles.

The most interesting thing is that, despite its name, it is virtually unknown on the island; however, the community based in the United States has worked to give this food national significance through festivals and initiatives like celebrating its National Day, as noted in a report by Telemundo 51.

For several years now, the Cuban Sandwich Festival has been held in Tampa. The idea for the festival originated in October 2011, when Víctor Padilla and his wife Jolie González-Padilla were brainstorming ideas for an event that the city of Tampa could enjoy, and they realized that the Cuban sandwich was the star attraction in Tampa.
