Cuban and American young people carry out restoration work on the staircase that provides access to the Sanctuary of the Virgin of Charity of El Cobre, in Santiago de Cuba, one of the most important temples of the Catholic religion in the nation.
According to the information published by the Archdiocese of Santiago de Cuba on Facebook, Catholics from the United States, along with the parishioners of the El Cobre parish, are restoring the perimeter fence, the first greeting received by people arriving at this site.
In the shared images, you can see the repair and cleaning work of the railing that marks the beginning of the staircase, where many devotees come every September 8th to fulfill the promises made to the Holy Mother.
The photo gallery also shows young people from the Effeta and Emmaus lay movements in El Cobre, polishing a bronze Marian shield, part of the perimeter gate.
The note published on the social network also specifies that work is being done on "replacing internal luminaires of the Sanctuary," while emphasizing that these works do not affect the temple's hours, which remain open from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.
This Sunday during the mass, the Archbishop of Santiago de Cuba, Monsignor Dionisio García Ibáñez, urged Cubans to seek harmony and accept different ways of thinking as a path to peace.
Under the gaze of the Virgin of Charity of El Cobre, during a prayer of supplication, García expressed: "With the potential that our people have, let us learn to live in harmony, with one heart and one soul, with different ways of thinking, and together, find solutions that lead us to be born in peace, to work in peace, to eat in peace, to die in peace."
In the prayer, García thanked "the children who lovingly care for the elderly at home; those who support their relatives and friends from afar; neighbors who support each other in times of sadness and happiness; and many others who selflessly serve their fellow beings," referring to the current issue of young people migrating and leaving their relatives behind, often elderly.
Also from the steps of the Catholic church, Cuban activists have denounced to the world the injustices of the regime.
Today is March 24, 2024, in support of the political prisoners for the freedom of Cuba... Homeland, life, and freedom," Yerismar Velázquez Cruz said last April through a live stream on her social networks, in which she wore a white sweater with signs that read "Homeland and Life" and "Freedom for Cuba," among other messages.
Subsequently, the nurse was detained by State Security for protesting in the Sanctuary of El Cobre in favor of the freedom of political prisoners in Cuba.
