The General Customs of the Republic of Cuba classified travelers from the United States visiting Cuba as "high risk."

According to an official communication on its social channels, the Customs Authority stated that it based its inclusion criteria "on tackling the main customs offenses, which include drug trafficking, subversive activities, and various forms of smuggling."

In 2023, cases of drug trafficking in Cuba doubled compared to 2022.

At the air border, 55 cases of drug trafficking were detected, authorities stated on their social media profiles.

In the early months of 2024, the Cuban Customs confiscated 3.2 million Cuban pesos and 91,000 USD, exceeding the 5,000 pesos allowed to be taken out of the Island in either currency.

A total of 135 violations have been recorded, compared to 233 for the entire year of 2022, during which 5.3 million Cuban pesos and 420,000 dollars were confiscated, according to a summary of a roundtable program published by Cubadebate on this topic.

"In 2023, 38 more cases were reported than in 2022, and 50 kilograms of substances were seized at the border. This year, there have already been 17 cases, and the quarter is not yet over; nearly 99 kilograms of drugs have been confiscated," said Nelson Cordovés Reyes, the national head of Customs.

The most commonly seized items are synthetic cannabis, chemical narcotics, and psychotropic medications, with 73,000 tablets confiscated this year.
