The Cuban reggaeton artist Alejandro Santoya, popularly known as El Yonki, traveled to Cuba this weekend to say goodbye to his deceased mother, leaving her a final farewell with an emotional Yoruba chant dedicated to Ikú.
In Afro-Cuban tradition, Ikú rules the process of physical death. He is the Lord of Death, the one who comes to receive the body.
El Yonki sang to Ikú, out loud, under the sunlight, in the middle of the street. He honored the tradition before the deity responsible for receiving his mother, who had been fighting against a painful illness for months.
The artist said this week that he feels devastated because his mom was a very important person in his life. "I have to go on stage and sing to the audience with a broken heart," he recently expressed.
El Yonki and his wife have stayed away from social media and are mourning with the utmost discretion possible.
The artist had expressed on several occasions that his love for his mother and his daughter forced him to travel to Cuba very frequently. He emphasized that he would not stop visiting them, even if he received criticism in Miami, because for him, family comes first.
