The renowned Cuban gastroenterologist Pablo Orlando Nodarse Pérez died on Friday at the age of 89 in Havana.
The "Hermanos Ameijeiras" Clinical Surgical Hospital announced his passing on its Facebook profile, where it shared photos of the honor guard that colleagues gave to the distinguished specialist.
With immense sadness and pain, today we bid farewell physically to one of the most beloved and respected professors in our guild. As cited in the article from La Voz de Cabaiguán, 'the oldest Cuban gastroenterologist,' the post recalled.
"See you soon, Professor Pablo Orlando Nodarse Pérez, because you will always live on in every graduate, every scientific success, every new task accomplished, your legacy will never die," he concluded.
Born in Cabaiguán, Sancti Spíritus, on March 2, 1935, the physician was a second-degree specialist in gastroenterology.
From 1975 to 1982, he was the head of the provincial gastroenterology group and a member of the national specialty group. In that last year, he was appointed as the founding chief of the Gastroenterology Service of Hermanos Ameijeiras.
The institution recalled that it was Dr. Nodarse Pérez, with his knowledge and perseverance, who gave a great boost to the development of diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy.
Together with the general surgery service, he started laparoscopic cholecystectomy and the development of minimally invasive endoscopic surgery in a general way, as well as the multidisciplinary development of extracorporeal biliopancreatic lithotripsy, as a unique experience in the country," he pointed out in another post.
Due to his outstanding merits, in 2019 he was awarded the honorary recognition of Hero of Labor of the Republic of Cuba, unique in his specialty of gastroenterology in the country.
Also the General Hospital Camilo Cienfuegos, from his native province, awarded him the Order "To the Service of Life."
