The Cuban regime raised the number of injured to six in the tumultuous fight that broke out this Saturday at the place known as Finca de los Monos in Havana.
The information was made public this Sunday by the government spokesperson Humberto López during the broadcast of the National Television News (NTV), in a peculiar news coverage that did not include images of the massive brawl and focused on "debunking" what was published by independent media, which he accused of being alarmists and manipulative.
Hours after the news went viral on social media and in the face of the silence of the official media, the government of Havana released a statement denying alleged deaths reported and stating that the events left two people injured, who had been treated at hospitals.
In addition, he also lashed out at the media that reported the incident and claimed that the event was an "unapproved activity," even though it had been announced by Cuban state television, where nothing is promoted without the necessary institutional approvals.
"Unfortunately, the incident caused two injured individuals who received immediate medical attention without any life-threatening danger. There are no fatalities," the statement from the authorities of the capital city indicated.
However, hours later and following the magnitude of events that proved impossible to hide by the censors of the regime, the official press echoed the official versions and offered a partial and sugar-coated account of one of the most violent episodes seen in Cuban society, involving groups of young people and teenagers armed with machetes and other white weapons.
"The note [from the Havana government] does mention the injured," López acknowledged. "One is currently hospitalized at William Soler Hospital, he is 18 years old, he is out of danger after having been operated on at the Joaquín Albarrán Domínguez Clinical Surgical Hospital (known as Clínico de 26)."
Regarding the second injured person, López explained that it was a 20-year-old young man, who was also treated at the Clínico de 26 Hospital "for a wound that required stitches and was discharged."
But this note was at noon. Investigations have continued, and it turns out that besides those two, four other people were attended to at the Clinical Hospital of 26. A 15-year-old minor, a 20-year-old man, another 41-year-old man, and a 38-year-old woman were attended to," the presenter reported.
According to him, everyone received medical attention. "The woman was discharged, but the other three [patients] left the institution irresponsibly," López added.
Their news coverage did not show a single one of the images and videos circulating on social media, in which groups of young people with threatening attitudes were seen walking the streets of the capital armed with machetes and other sharp weapons. However, López accused the independent press of manipulation and "unscrupulous attitudes to try to discredit Cuba with falsehoods."
Far from reporting the facts, the star presenter of the Cuban counterintelligence focused on "analyzing how the events were manipulated and exposing the attitude of individuals and media outlets" that spread "fake news." Additionally, he gave a detailed explanation of the protocols established to validate the statements of the government of the capital regarding the "non-authorization" to hold the event.
The journalism in this country is disgusting. They don't show a video of what happened, of the hundreds of young people running around (many with machetes) so that people can see the level of violence that exists, and in the process alert blind parents. Oh noooo, it's better to say that everything happened because the activity was not authorized, end of story," protested a Cuban in the Facebook group 'Cuban Mothers for a Better World'.
"Weren't they authorized, right? And the promotion even came out on the Habana channel. The point is not whether they were authorized or not. That doesn't take away from the savagery that was going on there, and the one that has been unleashed lately all over Cuba. Two days ago, there was a group in my neighborhood carrying sticks with sharp tips and throwing stones at houses and everything. And then? Does nobody see anything?" the woman concluded in her comment, similar to dozens of others that condemned the manipulation by the official press and the regime's efforts to conceal the wave of violence growing in the country.
