More than a decade after the political and economic forum known as BRICS was founded, Cuba expressed its interest in joining this alliance during the official visit being made to Russia by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla.

During his intervention at the group meeting held in the city of Nizhny Novgorod, Rodríguez conveyed the regime's firm determination to "explore and favor all possible avenues" for the strengthening of relations with member countries, seeking mutual benefits.

That objective, reiterated on the social network X, preceded the idea of inserting into projects like the Belt and Road Initiative, while also denouncing the implementation of coercive measures against Russia and NATO's actions to fuel the conflict with Ukraine.

Likewise, he pointed out the need for a "new civilized coexistence where solidarity, cooperation, and integration among States prevail," for which the BRICS group "can significantly contribute to this historical demand from the South, especially on the path towards the necessary reform of the current international financial system."

The chancellor highlighted the importance of the forum's contribution to addressing the current global food crisis, with its impetus “to agricultural development and food production, whose practices and experiences serve as valid references for other nations, as is also the case with the use and generation of renewable energies in development projects, a matter of vital importance for the nations in the region.”

Rodríguez extolled the "benefits" of the New Development Bank for the BRICS, which will allow them to have indigenous financial support and strengthen the actions of the group, representing 45% of the world's population and one-third of the global GDP.

The BRICS initiative to establish a broad-based foreign currency reserve mechanism that ensures certainty and stability to the South, as well as the creation of mutual credit lines in local currencies, is an important contribution to the formation of a new and inclusive international financial architecture," points out the speech published on the official website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Cuba.

From this platform, I would like to reiterate Cuba's willingness to share its modest experiences and results in the fields of the medical, pharmaceutical, and biopharmaceutical industry, health, education, science, among other sectors, with the BRICS for the benefit of our peoples," he expressed.

As part of his work agenda, Rodríguez met with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov to assess the state of the "excellent relations" between the two countries and the strengthening achieved in economic-commercial ties amid the implementation of projects in different sectors.

The Cuban chancellor arrived in Russia from China, where the Minister of Foreign Affairs Wang Yi reaffirmed the "firm support" for the regime and expressed interest in expanding areas of cooperation and intensifying multilateral collaboration amid the economic crisis facing the island.

BRICS, emerged in 2010, is an association, group, and political and economic forum of emerging countries, initially formed by Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. The name of the formation corresponds to the initials of its members, although since January 2024, Egypt, Iran, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Ethiopia have joined.
