Artemisa city has been experiencing a surge in crime in recent weeks, with residents reporting multiple home burglaries, especially at night and during the prolonged power outages they are also facing.

The Cuban Institute for Freedom of Expression and Press (ICLEP) reported on Wednesday on social media that "a wave of home robberies has been unleashed in recent days in neighborhoods of the city," and according to the complaints, thieves take advantage of the natural darkness of the night and that caused by power outages to carry out their misdeeds.

About a week ago, all the household appliances were stolen from a house located on 50th Street, between 3rd and 5th, in the Eric neighborhood, stated the report.

Days before, two other robberies had occurred in two different apartments in the same building, in the Centro neighborhood.

According to the report, so far, the police have not informed the families affected by the robberies about the progress of the investigations.

In the last months of 2023, several murders were reported in municipalities in the province of Artemisa with the aim of robbing the victims.

However, the increase in robberies, assaults, and violent crimes is not exclusive to that western territory. The entire country is experiencing a notable growth in criminal incidents, both in number and severity.

This same week, residents of the San Pedrito neighborhood, in the city of Santiago de Cuba, captured a man who snatched a cell phone from a girl.

Days before, it was reported that a young man was arrested in the José Martí neighborhood of Santa Clara, in Villa Clara, for stealing five granite benches from the park in that area.

Also in that city in the center of the country, a man who took five million pesos from the home of a self-employed worker at the beginning of the month was arrested.
