The number of foreign residents who obtained Spanish nationality in the Canary Islands experienced a significant growth last year, and among them, there are more than two thousand Cubans.

In 2023, 2,967 Cuban citizens residing in the Canary Islands were granted nationality, more than double the previous year when the number was 1,246.

An article from MaspalomasAhora quotes data from the National Statistics Institute (INE). They indicate that there was an 84% increase in naturalizations in 2023, compared to 2022.

In 2023, 11,622 foreigners were reported to have been naturalized in the archipelago, compared to the 6,291 registered in the previous year.

Cuba is the country of origin with the highest number of naturalized citizens in the Canary Islands, followed by Venezuela, Morocco, Colombia, and Argentina.

Other countries such as the Dominican Republic, Mauritania, Honduras, Bolivia, and Peru also showed significant figures, with numbers ranging from 202 to 149 naturalized persons.

In 2022, the list was completed by India, the Dominican Republic, Uruguay, Ecuador, and Senegal, with numbers ranging from 147 to 131 new Spanish citizens.

This increase in the acquisition of nationalities reflects a growing trend of integration of foreigners in the Canary Islands, highlighting the strong presence of Cubans and Venezuelans among the new Spanish citizens.
