Alba Delia Sánchez Benítez, 58, was murdered by her ex-partner early on Sunday morning while she was working at her workplace in El Cotorro, Havana.

Sánchez, a mother of two adult children, was a security and protection agent at the "Dr. Fermín Valdés Domínguez" Student Residence, in the municipality of Havana, the place where the crime that ended her life was committed.

Friends of the victim confirmed to the digital newspaper CubaNet that the aggressor, taking advantage of the romantic relationship he had with Sánchez, managed to persuade another security guard at the residence to let him enter the building, where he stabbed the woman to death.

A close acquaintance of the deceased, who requested not to be identified, told the independent media outlet that she had ended the relationship with the man. "No one could imagine that the man would do something like that, but apparently he was obsessed with her because, after he killed her, he took her cell phone to check if she was with someone else. That's why the police were able to catch him, through the phone," the source stated.

One of Sánchez's children resides in the United States, and would arrive in Cuba this Monday, along with the mother and a brother of the victim, to attend his funeral, reported CubaNet.

Sánchez's murder raises the number of reported femicides to 27 in Cuba to date.

The YoSíTeCreo platform in Cuba and the Gender Observatory Alas Tensas, which keep a record of crimes against women, confirmed 25 femicides in the country up to June 12th, after two more cases were verified: that of Cindy Samanthy González Espinosa (Samy), 32 years old, which occurred in Havana on May 18th, and that of Katia Ortiz Figueredo, 25 years old and mother of two minors, in Las Tunas on June 5th.

This Saturday, it was reported that another mother of two children, Liset Quesada Romero, was murdered by her partner in the municipality of Bejucal, Mayabeque province, according to sources close to the woman.

Feminist platforms have insisted on the need for the Cuban government to declare a state of emergency due to gender-based violence and advocate for a comprehensive law against macho violence, as femicide is not designated in the Cuban Penal Code.

The president Miguel Díaz-Canel stated in March that the number of convictions for gender-based murders in the country tripled in 2023 compared to 2022, increasing from 18 to 61.

Although he acknowledged that gender-based violence incidents "appear with regrettable frequency," Díaz-Canel argued that the "enemies of the revolution" - whom he did not specifically mention - "conveniently and tendentiously manipulate" the figures.
