Feminist platforms confirm three femicides in Cuba, making a total of 28 in 2024.

In just 72 hours, between June 14th and 16th, three more women were killed in Cuba by men who were their partners or had been in the past. The gender-based crimes took place in Mayabeque, Pinar del Río, and Havana.

The number of femicides in Cuba rose to 28 before the end of the first semester of 2024, after independent feminist platforms confirmed three more misogynistic crimes against women that occurred in just 72 hours.

The gender violence observatories YoSíTeCreo in Cuba (YSTCC) and Alas Tensas (OGAT) confirmed on Tuesday three new cases of femicide in the country, between June 14 and 16, and reiterated their call to the authorities to implement "preventive actions to preserve the lives of women and other people affected by femicidal violence."

The platforms verified the femicide of Liset Quesada Romero, 33 years old, who was murdered by her partner on June 14 in Bejucal, Mayabeque, information that had been circulated on social media based on reports from people close to the victim.

Our condolences go out to the 2 minor children, the result of a previous relationship, who survive her, as well as other family members and close acquaintances," emphasized the organizations.

They also regretted the femicide of Jessica Castillo, 32 years old, on June 15th in the city of Pinar del Río, and conveyed condolences to her three underage children and the rest of the family.

The young mother was killed by her partner, who was on probation for previous charges of femicide violence.

YSTCC and OGAT urged the public to "avoid the revictimization that we identified on social media against Jessica, as it is not justified to deprive another person of their life nor the responsibility of correctional institutions by granting parole without proper protocols."

The third verified case reported by the platforms was that of Alba Delia Sánchez Benítez, 58 years old, murdered on June 16 by her ex-partner while she was at her workplace, the Dr. Fermín Valdés Domínguez student residence in El Cotorro, Havana.

Regarding this latest crime, carried out in a state entity, the statement was categorical: "We hope that the corresponding measures are taken for the serious security flaw in that institution, which facilitated the femicide of Alba Delia and put students under state responsibility at risk".

The observatories sent their condolences to Sánchez's two children, other relatives and loved ones, as well as her colleagues and students, "who bid her farewell on social networks and remember her joyful and jovial character."

In addition to the 28 macho crimes committed to date, YSTCC and OGAT have reported three attempted feminicides, six cases that require access to police investigation, and the murder of a man for gender-related reasons.

Meanwhile, they continue to investigate four alerts received respectively from the provinces of La Habana, Artemisa, Granma, and Cienfuegos.

The Cuban feminist platforms, dedicated to women's care and protection of their rights, recorded 220 femicides on the island from 2019 until March of the current year, with 89 of them in 2023.

However, according to official data from the Cuban government, between January and October of last year, 117 femicides had been committed, a number higher than the count of violent deaths of women recorded by feminist organizations of the independent civil society in Cuba.
