A Cuban woman in the United States reflected on TikTok about three aspects that, in hindsight, would have facilitated her adaptation when emigrating.
In her video, the young woman emphasized the importance of knowing English, learning to drive, and preparing mentally to work hard.
In his case, he explained that in Cuba he had free time that he could have used to study English, which would have been very valuable upon arriving in the United States, as proficiency in the language is crucial for communication and integration.
On the other hand, she commented that, although not all Cubans have access to cars, she had the opportunity to learn how to drive thanks to her father, who was a driver. Obtaining her driver's license in Cuba undoubtedly allowed her to better adapt to life in the U.S., where mobility and the independence provided by a car are essential.
He also emphasized the importance of arriving in the North American country with a mindset of hard work and effort, insisting that being aware of the need to work diligently from the very first day helps to better face the initial challenges, avoiding idealizing the experience as the fulfillment of the American dream.
The video generated numerous comments on TikTok, where other users shared their experiences and advice: "I learned English in months, I forgot about the Telemundo soap operas and Spanish series. I wanted to go to college and that was my goal"; "For me, English really saved me. If I hadn't studied in Cuba, I would be screwed here"; "You forgot to mention learning a trade that you can use here, not talking about studying at the university, but a trade that would serve you anywhere," some said to him.
