Desperation and chaos at the Civil Registry Office in Santiago de Cuba

The Cuban people are desperate with the long lines under the sun for any procedure. See how the situation is at the Civil Registry in Santiago de Cuba.

The independent journalist Yosmany Mayeta Labrada recently published a video on his Facebook profile showing a tumultuous line at the Civil Registry Office (REC) in Santiago de Cuba.

The images reflect the desperation and suffering of the people crowded in the place under the intense sun, trying to carry out essential procedures for civilian life.

"A desperate town, with hunger and under the sun," one of the citizens in the video can be heard saying, capturing the widespread anguish of those present.

These scenes are not unusual in the offices of the REC, which are in charge of registering civil events such as births, marriages, and deaths, as well as issuing certifications and correcting errors.

People face numerous difficulties in completing these procedures. The required documentation is hard to obtain on the island and the assistance to the population is limited to office hours, which forces many to miss work to carry out these procedures.

Furthermore, the lack of automation and the frequency with which these offices suspend services due to power outages further complicates the situation.

Complaints about the inefficiency and poor conditions of the REC service are continuous and heard throughout the country.

The lack of resources and poor management are evident, worsening the situation of citizens who are already facing numerous daily hardships.
