The Vladimir Ilich Lenin Provincial Hospital in Holguín denied that a femicide occurred in one of its operating rooms, an incident reported by the Cuban Women's Network.

Last week, the Women's Network reported a woman who was hospitalized in the center and had died at the beginning of the month from a beating inflicted by her partner in the hospital itself.

Now the medical institution denies that a crime occurred and argues that during the victim's autopsy, no signs of violence were found on the body as a possible cause of death.

According to the note shared on their Facebook profile, "this is a chronic alcoholic patient who was admitted to the surgery department with a case of obstructive jaundice for evaluation," and who "was accompanied the whole time by her husband with a similar history."

Add the post that within the first 24 hours the woman showed an unfavorable evolution and in the morning, while her husband was assisting her in the bathroom, she experienced a loss of consciousness and was immediately transferred to the central surgical unit and from there to the intensive care unit, where she died hours later "as a result of irreversible shock".

However, the hospital acknowledged that concern had been raised about a possible violent incident, which prompted them to alert the Police.

Taking into account the patient's history and her spouse's characteristics, and considering the concern raised by a potential violent act, information was provided to the Police and the Legal Medicine department.

In the autopsy, "no evidence of violence as a possible cause of death was found, but elements were found that confirmed that it was related to the pathology for which the patient was admitted."

According to information from the Red Femenina, which was denied by the Holguin hospital, the deceased was named Elaine Laguna Figueredo and was 50 years old.

The events allegedly took place on June 4th, according to witnesses. An employee at the center stated that the night before, their partner had come to see them at the hospital "a bit drunk" and hit them in the bathroom; whereas a patient admitted to the same ward claimed that it happened in the morning.

According to their testimonies, the man entered the bathroom and "he put her in the shower fully clothed," even though the patient had a medical catheter and IV drip in place.

Being both in the sanitary service, located in front of where the nurses and doctors are, claps and the man's voice urging the woman to get up from the floor could be heard. "At no time did the voice of the woman be heard," added the patient, pointing out that after 15 minutes, the aggressor left the bathroom and returned with another man, in a state of drunkenness.

After being informed of what was happening, the medical staff entered the bathroom and found the patient on the floor. They placed her on a gurney and took her to the operating room, sources said.

A health professional who requested not to have their identity revealed, out of fear of reprisals, reported that the victim fell into a coma, had to be artificially ventilated, and was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit, where they died shortly after.

According to the witnesses, the assailant was arrested by the police at the hospital itself.
