Social media is once again highlighting a new case of animal abuse in Cuba, this time occurring in Havana, with images circulating this Tuesday showing a dog trapped in a car under the sun.

Grettel Montes de Oca posted on Facebook the photographs stating that the dog had been locked inside a car for an hour, outside the Oncology Hospital, at the main entrance on F and 29.

“The person who reported it tried to look outside with the parkers and even attempted to open the car,” Montes stated, urging people to share the post to help get the dog out of that dangerous situation.

In just a few hours, the post was shared by 425 people. Many recalled that there have been reports of animals dying under similar circumstances, which constitutes another documented case of animal abuse in Cuba.

Social media is often the channel through which reports of similar incidents in Cuba are shared, where animals have little to no protection from the regime.

Recently, Cuban animal rights activists reported that the owners of a Siberian Husky puppy locked it in an abandoned house in San José de las Lajas, Mayabeque, for three days.

Yenney Caballero, a staunch animal advocate in that area, broke a piece of the acrylic door, and when she inserted her cellphone camera, she confirmed that the place was abandoned and that the prisoner was a puppy.

Outraged and unsure of what to do, Caballero ultimately decided to release the animal through the opening in the acrylic panel and told the dog's owners to come looking for her and, if they wished, to report her to the police.

Recently, the same activist reported on Facebook that in Villa Clara, a horse was subjected to mistreatment, which led to the animal's death.

Caballero called for urgent action from the government to punish those responsible and to amend the Animal Welfare Decree in favor of harsher penalties.
