A Cuban activist distributed ham and cheese sandwiches to low-income elderly individuals in Havana on Saturday night, aiming to improve the nutrition of this vulnerable group.
Yankiel Fernández, coordinator of the Humanitarian Project Aliento de Vida, explained on Facebook this Saturday that he decided to distribute ham and cheese sandwiches to the elderly because he believes that providing them with lunch only twice a week, along with enhanced meals on Fridays, is not enough. "There is always much more to be done," he stated.
The activist noted that he could not remain "with his arms crossed" because he believes there is a "need" and too many vulnerable and needy people, as a result of the inaction of the Cuban regime.
“Thank you to those who help us continue to help others. Thank God for touching hearts and sending us angels,” she noted in her post.
The shared photo gallery shows that at least twenty elderly individuals benefited. It is also evident that they are people with limited financial resources.
Recently, the activist himself launched a petition for assistance for children living in extreme poverty in villages of the Sierra Maestra and other remote areas of Santiago de Cuba.
Fernández made a call on social media to anyone who can contribute with donations for the children and other residents in those communities who lack basic necessities such as food, clothing, and medicine.
In the midst of the economic crisis and extreme shortages, coupled with the inaction of the Cuban regime, many people are left vulnerable and helpless. This situation has sparked solidarity among several activists.
In January, the young Cuban Massiel Carrasquero Ramos, along with friends, distributed soup to vulnerable people in Havana.
From her Facebook profile, where she identifies as Massy Carram, this young woman announced that she wanted to make a hearty stew to distribute. "People don't just eat on December 31," she said.
