Hurricane Beryl left at least 10 dead in the Caribbean region after passing through Jamaica on Wednesday, where more than 400,000 residents are without electricity and there are also millions of euros in damages to infrastructure.
The category 4 hurricane hit the Caribbean island, where over a thousand Jamaicans had to seek shelter to protect themselves.
The victims are reported in Jamaica (1), Grenada (3), Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (3), and Venezuela (3), where there are also five missing persons.
On Wednesday afternoon, Beyrl was advancing towards Mexico with sustained maximum winds of 220 km/h.
It is expected to land between Thursday night and Friday morning over the Yucatan Peninsula, a very touristy area. According to the Reuters agency, it is less than 800 km away from the beaches of the area.
In the last few hours, after weakening to category 3, the phenomenon began to affect the Cayman Islands with strong winds and dangerous storm surges, according to the bulletin from the National Hurricane Center (NHC) of the United States.
At 5:00 am (Miami time), the maximum sustained winds had decreased to 195 km/h and its center was moving west-northwest at about 31 km/h.
In Cuba, the hurricane has already caused rains and surges on the southeastern coast, and feeder bands are reported over several provinces in the central part of the island.
On Wednesday, the deterioration of the weather was reported in Cabo Cruz, in the municipality of Niquero, in Granma, where the waves reached 1.5 to two meters in height and sustained winds of 40 kilometers per hour were recorded, with gusts of up to 80 kilometers per hour.
On the other hand, CMKX Radio Bayamo shared several photos of the worsening atmospheric conditions on the coast of Hotel Marea del Portillo.
The Meteorology Institute (INSMET) warned about the imminent deterioration of the weather conditions in eastern Cuba due to the proximity of Beryl, with winds, rains, and strong swells that will cause coastal flooding ranging from light to moderate.
During its journey through the seas south of eastern Cuba, an increase in winds is expected in the eastern region, which in the afternoon today may reach sustained speeds between 40 and 55 km/h with higher gusts in the south of Granma, explained INSMET.
