Hurricane Beryl left at least 10 dead in the Caribbean region after passing through Jamaica on Wednesday, where over 400,000 residents are without electricity, along with millions of euros in infrastructure damage reported.
The Category 4 hurricane struck the Caribbean island, forcing over a thousand Jamaicans to seek shelter for protection.
The victims have been reported in Jamaica (1), Grenada (3), Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (3), and Venezuela (3), where there are also five individuals missing.
On Wednesday afternoon, Beyrl was progressing towards Mexico with maximum sustained winds of 220 km/h.
It is expected to arrive between Thursday night and Friday morning over the Yucatán Peninsula, a highly touristy area. According to Reuters, it is less than 800 km away from the beaches in the region.
In recent hours, after weakening to category 3, the phenomenon began to impact the Cayman Islands with strong winds and dangerous wave conditions, according to the bulletin from the National Hurricane Center (NHC) of the United States.
At 5:00 AM (Miami time), maximum sustained winds had decreased to 195 km/h, and its center was moving west-northwest at about 31 km/h.
In Cuba, the hurricane has already caused rain and swells along the southeastern coast, and feeder bands are reported over several provinces in the central part of the island.
On Wednesday, a worsening of the weather was reported in Cabo Cruz, in the municipality of Niquero, Granma, where waves reached heights of 1.5 to 2 meters, and winds of 40 km per hour were sustained, with gusts of up to 80 km per hour.
For its part, CMKX Radio Bayamo shared several photos of the worsening weather conditions along the coast at Hotel Marea del Portillo.
The Institute of Meteorology (INSMET) warned of the imminent deterioration of weather conditions in eastern Cuba due to the proximity of Beryl, bringing winds, rain, and strong waves that will result in light to moderate coastal flooding.
"During its path across the seas south of eastern Cuba, winds in the eastern region will increase, potentially reaching sustained speeds between 40 and 55 km/h this afternoon, with stronger gusts in southern Granma," explained INSMET.
