The official Cuban press has uncovered this week the case of a significant sugar theft that occurred at a mill in Artemisa last October.

It happened at the Harlem agroindustrial complex in Bahía Honda municipality, where 12 people were involved in the theft of two tons of sugar, which they transported in a ZIL 130 truck from the company itself.

According to El Artemiseño newspaper, the thieves bribed two guards to turn a blind eye. First, they offered them 10,000 pesos to take one ton; then, that same night, they gave them another 13,000 to take the other ton.

After being arrested, the members of the network were placed in provisional detention and charged with the crimes of burglary and bribery, for offering money.

The guards were not imprisoned, but they were charged with the crime of bribery (for accepting the bribe), and furthermore, they will no longer be able to practice their profession in any state-owned economic entity.

The Provincial Prosecutor's Office of Artemisa is requesting penalties ranging from eight to 18 years of deprivation of liberty.

The authorities recovered 30,890 pesos.
