The relatives of the Cuban Omar Verdecia Fernández, the sole survivor of a tragic traffic accident that occurred in Uruguay at the end of June, are asking for help to cover the expenses of medical care during his hospitalization.

Verdecia, 39, suffered serious injuries when the van he was traveling in collided head-on with a car going in the opposite direction, at kilometer 160 of route 3, in the Uruguayan department of Flores, on June 25th, according to preliminary reports of the incident.

The Cuban was urgently transferred to a hospital in the city of Trinidad, with his health compromised due to several injuries: fractures of 10 ribs and hip, and lacerations in the liver, as reported by his family on the GoFundMe platform, where they created a page to raise funds to cover medical expenses.

The request for help indicates that Verdecia "has to undergo many surgeries and does not have medical insurance as he does not reside in Uruguay".

Our family thanks every relative or friend who can provide their financial help no matter how small it is, every dollar counts," expresses the request, which aims to raise $4,000 dollars to cover Verdecia's medical assistance costs.

"Thank you for your kindness and for providing hope to this human being who, like millions of Cubans, has left Cuba with the hope of a better future for their family," concludes the text.

The initial information about the accident revealed that the driver of the vehicle carrying the Cuban and the occupants of the car - a 51-year-old man and a 58-year-old woman - died at the scene. Local media then reported that the victims were trapped in the vehicles and firefighters had to rescue them.

However, according to the Cuban communicator Niover Licea, the number of people who died in the accident had risen to 10, information that has not been confirmed.

Several Cubans have been involved in fatal accidents in Uruguay in the last year.

The young Haila Fiol Daudinot, 19 years old, died last Friday due to a traumatic brain injury she suffered when the motorcycle she was riding crashed into a truck in the city of Maldonado on July 3.

Ricardo Cabrera Enoa, a young Cuban doctor, also lost his life in that country in a traffic accident last April.

In July 2023, a fire that broke out in the residence where they lived claimed the lives of brothers Eduardo and Bryan Cruz Pérez, aged 21 and 23, in the city of Pando, in the metropolitan area of Montevideo.

A large community of Cubans currently resides in Uruguay, thousands of whom are seeking to resolve their migratory status after the government signed a decree in mid-June to grant them legal status.

The measure benefited around 20,000 people, mostly Cubans, who are currently residing irregularly in the South American country.
