The National Hurricane Center (NHC) issued a warning following the possibility that the now tropical storm Beryl may reorganize and become a category 2 hurricane before making landfall in Texas.
It is expected that Beryl will become a hurricane before making landfall. Preparations must be completed quickly in Texas," wrote the entity on its social media account X.
Currently, Beryl has maximum sustained winds of 105 kilometers per hour, and is located 314 kilometers southeast of Corpus Christi, according to the 11:00 am ET update from the NHC.
Its forward speed decreased from 19 km/h to 16 km/h, and some of the outer bands are starting to reach the coast of Texas in the form of brief strong showers and thunderstorms.
A large part of the Texas coast is under hurricane alert, and the cyclonic event is expected to make landfall early Monday. The hurricane warning extends from Baffin Bay, south of Corpus Christi, to Sargent, south of Houston.
Texas authorities warned the population along the entire coast to prepare for possible floods, heavy rains, and winds.
The Lieutenant Governor of the state Dan Patrick, who is acting governor while Greg Abbott is traveling in Taiwan, issued a preemptive disaster declaration for 121 counties.
On Sunday, the White House said that the Federal Emergency Management Agency had sent emergency response teams, search and rescue teams, bottled water, and other resources along the coast.
