Leakage causes another oil spill in Matanzas Bay.

Authorities ensure that no impacts from oil smudges or stains have been detected.

A leak in the 920-millimeter high vanadium fuel oil line in the industrial area of Matanzas caused an oil spill into the sea, as reported by the state-run newspaper Periódico Girón.

The spill, detected at 5:15 PM on Friday, July 12th, was estimated to be between 30 and 32 cubic meters of fuel, of which between 6 and 8 cubic meters reached the bay.

The incident occurred when, after a breakdown in the conduct, the containment tank overflowed, the information was detailed on Facebook.

Civil Defense in the province, specialists from the Fuel Marketing Company and from CITMA toured the coastline near the spill area and the beaches inside the bay on Saturday morning to analyze the situation.

However, they stated that no impacts from oil incrustations or stains have been detected.

Among the measures taken, it was reported that approximately 24 cubic meters were extracted from the containment pit.

Furthermore, work is being carried out to recover the area around the containment basin and the margins of the coastal area where the dock is located, applying rocky material to facilitate the extraction of embedded oil.

According to specialists, the process should conclude today if weather conditions allow, as detailed in the post.

The regime added that an operation is also being prepared to apply another cleaning technique, already used in previous spills in the province, once the manual extraction is completed.

Likewise, sediment monitoring will be conducted upon completion of the sanitation operations to identify possible alterations in the bay.

In April, authorities in Matanzas were investigating a spill of a toxic substance in the Bay of Cárdenas, with possible implications for the environment in the area.

The official press said that it was "ballast remnants from a disused tank located on the coast of Cárdenas".

In 2019, in the municipality of Calimete, Matanzas, the spill of 268 thousand liters of fuel oil was also reported, a significant figure that took place near the sugar mill Jesús Rabí after a malfunction in a fuel tank that supplies the distillery located near that sugar cane processing center.

In 2018, another oil spill was reported in Matanzas Bay caused by a ship unloading oil at Dock 1 of the Supertanker Terminal in the industrial area of Matanzas.
