Electric storms, showers, and rain occurred during Monday afternoon in the province of Artemisa, with greater intensity in areas such as Güira de Melena, where a severe storm was reported with hail the size of a chickpea falling.
"Strong activity of showers, rain, and thunderstorms in the province of Artemisa, which became intense in some areas," reported meteorologist Raydel Ruisánchez.
Intense rainfall was recorded in Güira de Melena, with an accumulation of 57.6 millimeters in just one hour. In addition, there were strong electrical discharges and gusts of wind, as indicated by the social media specialist.
According to Ruisánchez, these weather conditions were associated with "the great instability typical of the afternoon, stimulated by the passage of a tropical wave to the south and favorable conditions in the upper layers of the troposphere."
The Institute of Meteorology had forecasted that in the afternoon of this Monday it would become cloudy in the western region, as well as in the interior and south of the rest of the country, with some showers, rain, and thunderstorms.
This year, several severe local storms affected the western part of the country.
In May, intense rains accompanied by hailstones up to 1.5 centimeters fell in Guanajay, Artemisa. In the same week, a storm knocked down trees and caused damage to the electrical system in the Santiago de Las Vegas and Nuevo Santiago popular councils, in the Boyeros municipality of Havana.
Also in those two provinces, severe storms were recorded in March, with torrential rains and hailstorms that left areas of Boyeros, in the capital, and Bahía Honda and Guanajay, in Artemisa, covered with large chunks of ice, in an impressive spectacle that left the inhabitants astonished.
