A shark bit a spearfisherman on the leg on a reef off the coast of Key West on Monday afternoon, in another incident adding to a series of attacks that have occurred in recent days along coastal areas of Florida.
The incident occurred at approximately 3:40 p.m., while the man was spearfishing at the Florida Keys, reported the Monroe County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) on Facebook.
The injured person was taken to shore at Stock Island shortly after and airlifted by Monroe County's Trauma Star to Jackson South Medical Center in Miami.
According to reports cited by MCSO, the victim was alert and responsive at the time of the rescue. However, the authority indicated that their "immediate condition" was not clear when the publication was made.
In recent weeks, successive shark attacks have been reported on the coasts of Florida.
A 14-year-old teenager was bitten by a shark on a beach in Ponce Inlet, in Volusia County, in the central-eastern part of the state, while participating in training at a lifeguard camp.
Also in that county, another child of the same age was swimming in shallow waters at Daytona Beach Shores when he was bitten on the left foot by a shark, in the fourth attack reported in a week in Volusia.
Days earlier, in New Smyrna Beach, a 26-year-old man also suffered a bite from one of these fish while bathing at the beach on a float, just five feet (1.5 m) deep.
Like in a horror movie, at the end of June, a huge specimen caused panic among the bathers at South Beach, a beach in the city of Miami Beach, by reaching the shore and forcing everyone to immediately get out of the water.
A Cuban residing in Florida had the scare of his life when, during a spearfishing session, a bull shark stole a fish he had just caught right out of his hands, leaving only the head.
At the beginning of June, authorities in Florida warned swimmers about the presence of sharks on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico, after three people - a woman and two teenagers - were injured in shark attacks in Walton County.
