The driver of the car that fled after a traffic accident in Jagüey Grande, Matanzas, which resulted in two fatalities, has been arrested, according to the official Facebook profile "Con todos la Victoria."

"On the night of the 13th, at kilometer 143 of the National Highway, a traffic accident occurred between a car and a motorcycle that cost the lives of two people, with the driver of the car being held responsible, who fled the scene after the incident," revealed the mentioned source.

The report adds that the driver was identified by the authorities as Maikel García Jiménez, and that he was arrested on Tuesday, July 16, in Sancti Spíritus.

"In the investigations, it was revealed that he has several previous records for theft, illegal economic activity, and public disorder; and now he will have to bear another case of greater severity," concluded the state media, which did not provide further details on the circumstances of the incident, nor did it disclose the identities of the victims.

According to previous reports on social media, the collision was between a modern rental car and a motorcycle.

In the Facebook group "Yo Jagüey," the user Suney San Román stated that, in addition to the two deceased, a woman from the locality was injured and is currently hospitalized in the provincial hospital.

He also detailed that there were three people on the tour: one of them died upon arriving at the medical center, and the other two reportedly fled.

Among the comments on the post, one of the deceased - presumably the occupant of the motorcycle - was identified as "Carlitos," a family man who worked at the state-owned company Cubataxi.

In recent weeks, a high number of accidents have been reported in Cuba, many of them with fatal outcomes.

However, Cuban authorities recently stated that in the first half of 2024, there were 543 fewer traffic accidents recorded in the country than in the same period of the previous year.

In the official state television program Mesa Redonda, Colonel Roberto Rodríguez Fernández, head of the Specialized Transit Agency at the Ministry of the Interior (MININT), reported that there were 81 fewer deaths (23%) and a reduction of 151 injuries (5%) from January to June of this year compared to the same months in 2023.
