On the early morning of this Monday, a motorcyclist died after being hit by a rental car near the Plaza de la Revolución Antonio Maceo in Santiago de Cuba this Sunday.
The motorcyclist -whose identity has not been disclosed- died around 3:30 this morning as a result of the injuries sustained, according to journalist Yosmany Mayeta.
The aforementioned source specified that the deceased was an elderly man, father of three children.
So far, the alleged cause of the accident and other circumstances related to the second vehicle involved have not been disclosed.
Images circulated show a helmet next to the motorcycle and other belongings of the victim scattered on the ground. At a distance, bloodstains can be seen on the ground, presumably from the motorcyclist.
The car was left with dents on its right side as a result of the strong impact.
Previously, several internet users pointed out that the traffic light at that dangerous intersection was not working all day, thus increasing the risk of accidents in that area, which is usually very busy.
That was not the only accident that occurred this Sunday in Santiago de Cuba. In another incident, which took place at the intersection of Calvario and San Francisco streets, in the heart of the city's historic center, several people were injured after a collision between a bus and a motorcycle taxi that was carrying a coffin in the back and apparently also transporting several mourners.
In recent weeks, a high number of traffic accidents have been reported in Cuba, many of them with fatal outcomes.
However, Cuban authorities stated earlier this month that in the first half of 2024, there were 543 fewer traffic accidents recorded in the country compared to the same period the previous year.
Colonel Roberto Rodríguez Fernández, head of the Specialized Traffic Body of the Ministry of the Interior (MININT), reported on the official television program Mesa Redonda that between January and June there were 81 fewer deaths (23%) and a reduction of 151 injured individuals (5%) compared to the same months in 2023.
