An overwhelming video shows the moments after the serious accident in which a bus and a hired electric vehicle, used for funerals, collided this Sunday in the heart of the historic center of Santiago de Cuba, transporting a coffin and several mourners of the deceased.
In the images -shared by journalist Yosmany Mayeta- some of the people who were injured can be seen, as witnesses urged them to find transportation to go to the hospital.
It is especially dramatic to see that even the coffin carrying the deceased suffered damage as a result of the impact.
The singular event has led several internet users to agree on the observation that "that dead person didn't want to go alone," along with other similar expressions of horror at the macabre accident. So far, it is not clear how many people were injured or the severity of the injuries.
The images show only those who received blows and minor injuries, but at least one person can be seen being carried away.
In one of Mayeta Labrada's posts, a woman who identified herself as a neighbor of the family specified that one of the deceased's sons was undergoing surgery.
The incident occurred on San Francisco and Calvario streets for reasons that are unknown.
Due to its narrowness and the large number of vehicles that travel through it, in addition to being the artery that leads directly to the main funeral home in the province, Calvario Street is prone to traffic accidents.
That was not the only incident that occurred this Sunday in Santiago de Cuba.
In another serious traffic incident that occurred near the Plaza de la Revolución Antonio Maceo, a motorcyclist was hit by a rental car.
Unfortunately, the motorcycle driver passed away at around 3:30 this morning as a result of the injuries sustained. So far, the alleged cause of the incident has not been revealed, nor have any other circumstances related to the second vehicle involved in the accident.
In recent weeks, a high number of traffic accidents have been reported in Cuba, many of them resulting in fatalities.
However, Cuban authorities stated at the beginning of this month that in the first half of 2024, there were 543 fewer traffic accidents in the country than in the same period of the previous year.
Colonel Roberto Rodríguez Fernández, head of the Specialized Transit Body of the Ministry of the Interior (MININT), reported on the official television program Mesa Redonda that between January and June there were 81 fewer fatalities (23%) and a reduction of 151 injuries (5%) compared to the same months in 2023.
