Hialeah police officers shot and killed a Cuban man who was armed, in a confrontation that began with a domestic violence incident in a neighborhood of that city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, last Friday.
The man was identified as Rubén Manresa, a resident of Hialeah and originally from the town of Aguacate, in the municipality of Madruga, Mayabeque province, reported crime journalist Niover Licea on social media.
The events occurred around 7:00 a.m., in the area of W 53 Street and 5th Avenue in West Hialeah, where officers responded after an emergency call to 911 regarding a domestic disturbance, according to local media.
Upon the officers' arrival, they found the Cuban with a firearm. At some point, they asked him to lower his pistol, but the man reportedly refused to comply with the orders, and the agents were forced to fire, resulting in his death, according to the police version.
Steadman Stahl, from the Benevolent Association of the Police, told Telemundo51 that "when the officers arrived, they encountered an armed individual to whom they gave numerous orders to lower the weapon, a weapon that the individual then pointed at the officers, who found themselves in the necessity to fire, resulting in the death of this person at the scene."
According to the report from Licea, Manresa had been residing in Florida for about two years when he arrived in the United States thanks to a family reunification process.
Sources close to the family revealed to Telemundo that the Cuban and his wife had recently separated after a decade of marriage, which could have been the cause of the tragic incident.
The investigation of the incident is handled by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE), a standard procedure in cases involving police officers.
