Cuban activists asked for help for Nelson Álvarez, known as "El Porfiao," who dedicates himself to supporting people in need on the island, after a serious motorcycle accident that required emergency surgery.
Amelia Calzadilla, known for her reports on social media, stated that Álvarez had an accident and is hospitalized at the Clinical Hospital of 26, room 3D, bed 12.
"I could hardly understand him when he spoke to me because he is very ill. The side hose you see in this photo is connected to his lung," Calzadilla explained in a message shared on social media.
For his part, the Cuban Yankiel Fernandez, who visited him in the hospital, said that "he is doing well but needs the support of the entire community to which he helps so much. These are moments to support him; it is very hard for those of us who help to go through these things alone in a hospital," he expressed.
"The Stubborn one is not alone despite these days of tension. I can't leave him alone, above all I am human," he added, and posted a photo of the activist where he appears in better spirits.
A few months ago, Álvarez was one of the voices that rose to ask the regime to expedite the procedures for the girl Amanda, in urgent need of a liver transplant, to receive care outside the island.
Last year, after signing the exit permit for his seven-year-old son to have a better life, he sent a letter to the ruler Miguel Díaz-Canel in which he detailed all the anguish the people are experiencing and asked for a solution. His message began with a devastating phrase: "The Homeland is dying."
