In the midst of the widespread crisis on the island, a disturbing video showed several elderly people collecting powdered milk from a street in Santiago de Cuba.
Crouched down, they were picking up the powdered milk spilled on the floor with their hands and placing it in plastic bags, according to a brief video posted in a Facebook reel by reporter Yosmany Mayeta.
Similar images of Cubans, including children, collecting oil from the streets, eggs, and other products that have accidentally fallen from distribution trucks have been repeated in recent months on the island.
"It breaks the soul to see our elders doing that; the hunger and need are so great that it forces them to do it. Since when do elderly people not drink a glass of milk, children who haven't received it and shouldn't lack it for their development, and everything is guaranteed for them. LIES upon LIES is how one lives here," commented an internet user.
It is unknown how the milk ended up on the street.
Currently, Santiago de Cuba is in carnival, during which several violent incidents have been reported.
Images also emerged of people taking parts of the public restrooms set up at the carnival to improve their homes.
A video shared by journalist Yosmany Mayeta on Facebook showed a man taking parts of a wooden public bathroom on Friday, supposedly to repair his house.
