The Cuban archer Hugo Franco bid farewell at the 2024 Paris Olympics without reaching his goals, finishing in 32nd place, according to Jit.
The Esplanade of the Invalides in Paris was the setting where the Cuban concluded his participation. Despite his efforts, he was unable to stand out as he had hoped, highlighting the shortcomings faced by athletes from the island due to the lack of investment in their development.
Since securing his place in the individual competition, Franco demonstrated a consistent commitment, achieving the best position and score of a Cuban in the ranking round: 21st place with 699 points.
Under a scorching sun that raised the temperature above 30 degrees Celsius, he faced the Mexican Bruno Martínez, winning 7-3 and advancing to the top 32.
However, when facing the Chinese Yan Wang, the lack of experience in international events became evident. Despite his effort, only one of his arrows hit the center of the target at 70 meters, while his rival's were more accurate.
Franco lost with a score of 2-6, thus bidding farewell to these Olympic Games. "I leave with the positive of having participated and having given my maximum. Sometimes things don’t turn out as expected," he said.
He subtly highlighted the need for greater support and resources for Cuban athletes, who often compete at a disadvantage due to a lack of investment in their training and limited exposure to international events.
His performance in Paris was a reflection of the challenges faced by Cuban athletes. Upon returning home, Hugo Franco is embraced by the birth of his second daughter and the hope that one day Cuban sports will receive the necessary support to compete on equal terms on the international stage.
