The tropical depression moving over Cuba on the afternoon of this Saturday has become Tropical Storm Debby, with the threat of torrential rains and coastal flooding in much of Florida.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) reported that the system strengthened to become a tropical storm in the sixth advisory issued by the U.S. weather agency.

Debby is the fourth storm in the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season.

In its alert, the NHC forecasts intense rains, with likely coastal flooding in Florida and the southeastern U.S.

In addition, dangerous storm surge conditions are expected along the state's coasts.

Likewise, there will be strong winds until the middle of next week.

A warning has been issued for the Florida Keys and parts of the west coast of the peninsula since early morning, with possible adverse conditions in the next 48 hours.

The anticipated track of Debby indicates a movement towards the northwest during the weekend, followed by a turn to the north on Sunday. It is expected to cross the Florida straits on Saturday and move near or over the west coast of Florida between Saturday night and Sunday.
