Cuba: World champion Gabriel Rosillo falls in the semifinals of Greco-Roman wrestling in Paris.

In what many considered a semifinal, the Santiago native, universal champion in Belgrade 2023, brought out all his arsenal of techniques, but was unable to defeat a man who has four crowns at the global level and who achieved glory in Rio de Janeiro 2016.

Cuban Gabriel Rosillo lost this Tuesday to Armenian Artur Alexanián (3-5) in a great match and fell just short of competing for the gold medal in the 97 kilograms of Greco-Roman wrestling at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

In what many considered a pre-final, the Santiago native, universal champion in Belgrade 2023, unleashed his entire arsenal of techniques, but was unable to defeat a man who has claimed four crowns at the global level and experienced glory in Rio de Janeiro 2016.

Thus, the Caribbean athlete will have to fight for the bronze medal to avoid leaving the competition empty-handed, while Alexanián sought revenge for the defeat in the final of the last global tournament.

Before the fight in question, Rosillo had to come from behind to dramatically overcome the German Lukas Lazogianis (7-5) in his debut, and then in the quarter-finals, he eliminated the Finnish Arvi Savolainen 5-2.

Three years ago at Tokyo 2020, Cuba achieved the silver medal in this division - competition was in 98 kg - when Yasmani Lugo surprised everyone until the setback suffered in the final match.

Likewise, Yusneilys Guzmán (50) will soon face the Indian Vinesh Vinesh in the semifinals, after making a strong debut against the favorite Turkish Evi Demirhan (7-6) and defeating the Lithuanian Gabija Dilyte by superiority (10-0) in the quarterfinals.

"La Chiqui," as many know her, has already become the first fighter from the island to win two matches in Olympic events, which demonstrates her rise after reigning in the Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile, 2023.

The largest of the Antilles will vibrate today with the fight between two of its sons: the legend Mijaín López and Yasmani Acosta, representative of Chile, in the final of the 130 kilograms in Greco-Roman style.

López, considered the "GOAT" of the discipline, will seek in a few minutes his fifth crown under the five rings, after consecutive victories in Beijing 2008, London 2012, Rio de Janeiro 2016, and Tokyo 2020.
