Cuban Gabriel Rosillo won the bronze medal in the 97 kilograms Greco-Roman style at the Olympic wrestling in Paris 2024 this Wednesday, following the injury suffered by Uzbek Rustam Assakalov just a few seconds into the match.
Rosillo, world champion in 2023, didn’t sweat too much in the jersey after Assakalov presented a muscle problem in one of his shoulders and decided not to continue the decisive fight.
The Santiago athlete, considered one of the favorites in the division, came close to competing for the gold medal on Tuesday after losing in the semifinals to the Armenian Artur Alexanián (3-5).
In what many considered a pre-finale, the Pan American champion brought out all his arsenal of techniques, but failed to defeat a man who has four world championships and tasted glory in Rio de Janeiro 2016.
In just a few minutes, the Cuban Yusneylis Guzmán will face the American favorite Sara Ann Hildebrandt for the crown in the 50-kilogram freestyle event, although her guaranteed silver medal represents the first for women's wrestling from the island at the Olympic Games.
In the 50 kilograms of freestyle, "La Chiqui," as many call her, will try to defeat the American who already secured a bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Games.
To reach the title discussion, the gladiator born in Havana defeated the Turkish Evi Demirhan (7-6) in her debut and won by superiority (10-0) in the quarterfinals against the Lithuanian Gabija Dilyte.
However, she lost to the Indian Vinesh Vinesh (0-5) in the semifinal round. But due to the twists and turns of life, her attacker failed the usual weigh-in on the competition date and was automatically eliminated.
Thus, the one trained by the seasoned Filiberto Delgado became the first fighter from her country to secure a spot on the awards podium. Moreover, at 28 years old, she significantly improved the 12th place she achieved in Tokyo.
