The Cuban Yusneylis Guzmán lost this Wednesday to the American favorite Sara Ann Hildebrandt (0-3), but her silver medal in Paris 2024 represents the first for women's wrestling from the island in the Olympic Games.
Exactly on her 28th birthday, "La Chiqui," as many call her, could not withstand the push of the American, who had won a bronze medal in the competition under the five rings of Tokyo 2020.
To reach the discussion of the crown in the 50-kilogram freestyle category, the gladiator born in Havana overcame the Turkish Evi Demirhan (7-6) in her debut and defeated the Lithuanian Gabija Dilyte by superiority (10-0) in the quarterfinals.
However, she lost to the Indian Vinesh Vinesh (0-5) in the semifinal round. But due to the twists and turns of life, her attacker failed to make weight on the regular weigh-in day and was automatically eliminated.
Thus, the one trained by the seasoned Filiberto Delgado became the first fighter from her country to secure a spot on the awards podium. Moreover, she significantly improved upon the 12th place she achieved in Tokyo.
Cuba also celebrated today the bronze medal of Gabriel Rosillo in the 97 kilograms of Greco-Roman style, following the injury suffered by the Uzbek Rustam Assakalov just a few seconds after the fight began.
Rosillo, world champion in 2023, didn't sweat too much in the jersey after Assakalov presented a muscle problem in one of his shoulders and decided not to continue the decisive fight.
The Santiago native, considered one of the favorites in the division, fell just short of competing for the gold medal on Tuesday after losing in the semifinals to the Armenian Artur Alexanián (3-5).
In what many considered a preliminary final, the Pan American champion brought out all his arsenal of techniques, but could not defeat a man who has four crowns on a global level and experienced glory in Rio de Janeiro 2016.
Both awards join the crown of the star Mijaín López (130), while Luis Orta still has a chance to climb the podium in the 67 kilos.
At this moment, the largest of the Antilles is in 33rd place in the overall medal table, with one gold, one silver, and two bronzes, with only four competitive days left in the multi-sport event.
