A traffic accident that occurred at sunset on Wednesday resulted in three fatalities in the municipality of Guáimaro, in the province of Camagüey, according to reports from state-run media.
The accident occurred when a riquimbili collided with a private truck for reasons that are unknown.
The victims were identified asDavid González Sánchez, César Velázquez Hernández, and Erisdel Juviel Morel, all residents of the municipality of Guáimaro.
It has not been specified in which of the damaged vehicles the victims were traveling.
On social media, relatives of the deceased have expressed shock at the tragedy, which suddenly mourns three families.
"Today, once again, a traffic accident takes away three children from my beloved Guáimaro: César Velázquez, David, and Erisdel Juviel. A whole town mourns their departure. It takes me more than 30 minutes, amid tears and pain, to write these words. I have no idea how much despair and anguish those families are feeling, whom I have known since childhood and admire. I can't write more out of so much sadness... I still can't believe they have left like this," wrote the internet user Diosdani Margendie in an emotional post.
"In a tragic accident this afternoon, our brother, friend, and colleague Erisdel Juviel Morel lost his life. A very hard blow for all. How many things could I say today about him, I only know that he will continue to be among us, our crazy one, but very responsible and loved by everyone who knows him in Guáimaro. A hug from your brothers. Rest in peace," pointed out Damian Danilo Zamora in another emotional message.
"Your departure left a deep pain in my heart, but I also nurture a deep gratitude for the time we shared together. I will always remember you with love and gratitude, brother. Moments like these are felt in the soul, without overlooking the suffering of other families. I grew up with César Velázquez and David was a tremendous personal friend, but you are blood of my blood," wrote Jeider E. Mujica in heartfelt remembrance of Erisdel Juviel Morel.
The authorities are working on identifying the causes that led to the unfortunate collision. As of the closing of this report, there are no other details about what happened.
In recent weeks, a rising number of serious accidents has been reported throughout the country, unfortunately many of them resulting in fatalities.
In the case of Camagüey, one of the most notable incidents was the death of four people - one of them a minor - in a serious accident that occurred in the Santa Lucía beach road, in the municipality of Nuevitas, in the north of the province, at the beginning of July.
Although the population perceives an increase in traffic accidents in recent months, Cuban authorities stated at the beginning of July that in the first half of 2024, there were 543 fewer incidents recorded in the country compared to the same period the previous year.
In the official government television program Mesa Redonda, Colonel Roberto Rodríguez Fernández, head of the Specialized Transit Body of the Ministry of the Interior (MININT), also reported that there were 81 fewer fatalities (23%) and a reduction of 151 injured (5%) between January and June of this year, compared to the same period in 2023.
