María de las Mercedes Ibarra Ibáñez, great-granddaughter of the Cuban patriot and journalist Juan Gualberto Gómez, passed away on Wednesday in Havana at the age of 86.

Cuban official media remember her as an “active defender of her great-grandfather's legacy” and an “unconditional ally of the media” affiliated with the island's government.

They also recalled her dedication to preserving the historical memory of the Cuban nation and not allowing herself to be confused by those who seek to fragment it.

"Cubans must always be united, as Martí and Juan Gualberto wanted and fought for," he said during a recent event honoring the 170th anniversary of his great-grandfather's birth.

She is considered the last of the descendants of the fighter for Cuba's independence and during the republican period from 1901 to 1933.

The body of María de las Mercedes Ibarra Ibáñez will be cremated, by the decision of her relatives, and her funeral services will be held on a forthcoming date, which will be announced through the official website Cubaperiodistas.

The great-granddaughter of Juan Gualberto Gómez had turned 86 years old on February 27. She was visited by members of the Union of Journalists of Cuba (UPEC) on dates close to the patriot's birth or death.
