Drivers who have vehicles with modified plates, covered with vinyl, or altered in any way could face fines of $60 for a traffic violation, along with an additional fee set by the county, and the assignment of three points on their driver's license.
The Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) stated in an official release that personalized plates violate the legal requirements for license plates established in Florida law.
They claim that its use is hindering reflectivity, road safety, and that it can potentially affect the yellow validation stickers.
"Driving on a public road with altered plates is illegal and violates Section 320.061 of the Florida Statutes, which prohibits the illegal alteration of a license plate," authorities noted.
The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) will be on the lookout for this violation and will enforce the law. In the statement, they showed examples of illegally altered license plates.
Since 2020, citations for the illegal alteration of a Florida license plate have increased by more than 98%. The FLHSMV said that drivers who want a personalized license plate can obtain it legally.
"Florida offers more than 100 special license plates for various organizations, and the proceeds from the sales directly support the causes they represent. In addition, custom plates can be requested at a motor vehicle service center," they warned.
If a plate was altered and cannot be returned to its original condition, the driver must request a new one at the local tax collector's office. FHP agents who find altered plates may confiscate them.
